If you have earned income exceeding the standard deduction for your filing status, unearned income more than $1400, or net earnings from self-employment exceeding $400, you must file a tax return.

You may wish to file one if you are entitled to a refund of withholdings or are entitled to any refundable credits.

The standard deductions for 2024 are:

    • $14,600 for single filers and married people filing separately
    • $21,900 for heads of household
    • $29,200 for joint filers and surviving spouse

Individuals who are 65 or older, or blind, receive an additional $1,950.  ($3,900 if both)
