Check your brokerage statements. You’ll have to sort though your tax exempt interest dividends and cross check against information provided by your fund provider to find out what state they belong to. Unless the name says something like “California Tax Free Fund” it’s probably Multiple States (the last choice in the drop down).

Most financial institutions have an online tax center where you can find out how much of a particular fund’s exempt interest dividends comes from a particular state. The percentage from your state is exempt from state tax. So you really only need two entries – your state and the balance as Multiple States.

If you can’t find the fund information, you can contact your financial institution.
