Why am I asked whether my dependent grossed >= $5050? Why does it matter?

    Because if they aren't a full-time student under age 24, they aren't eligible to be claimed as a dependent if they made more than $5,050.  If they are a full-time student, it doesn't matter.  You can answer the question and move on.
