Why am I being asked to mail in form 8453 (attaching form 8949)? I have never had to mail anything in the past.

Sometimes, a form is too complicated or has too many entries for e-filing. Sometimes that means you can't e-file at all and must print your return and mail it in. In your case, you can e-file your return, but you also need to mail a printed copy of form 8949. Form 8453 is a cover sheet that helps make sure the 8949 goes to the right place.
