Why am I getting a decent amount back from federal but zero from state

There are too many variables to determine this without further information.  Do you normally get a refund from the state? What is different this year than last? Did you state withholdings go down from last year to this year?

 

If nothing much has changed this year over last year, do a line-by-line comparison of your return from this year compared to last.
