If your total tax payments and credits are greater than your total tax liabilities, then you will receive a refund for the overpayment.
If you received refundable credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, or the American Opportunity educational credit, your refund may be greater than the amount of tax paid. A large refund due to these credits is not unusual.
