Question

Why am I getting taxed on my scholarship money? I am a student employee (making $10/hr) and only made $6k in 2021 and it’s saying I made $17k and I owe over $800!

$800 is 2 months pay for me! I got scholarships but I’m not sure where the $11k came from considering I only got paid $6k by my employer and scholarships are supposed to be taxed. I am a dependent if that changes anything?

Why are you claiming scholarships? 

What did you do with the scholarships? Pay tuition or something else?

Did you get a 1098-T? What is in Box 1 and what is in Box 5?

Did your parents (or whoever claims you) get an education credit? Did their TurboTax program say you needed to claim scholarships? How much?
