If you are self-employed and file a Schedule C  you may use your social security number, SSN, in place of an EIN number.

Most sole proprietors don't need to obtain an EIN and can use their Social Security number.   However, you may want to obtain an EIN to protect your SSN from identify theft.

The IRS requires that corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies use EINs.
