Why did I get 900 back with paying 1500 in taxes when my girlfriend who paid 3000 in taxes and 5000 for school only get 200 back

There's no way anyone in this forum can determine that....all the details of each person's situation can be considerably different.  

 

Certainly, the higher withholding suggests she had more income.  That means she likely had more taxable income and perhaps the tax withholding more closely matched the eventual year-end taxes that she had to let the IRS keep.

 

Each of you should print out your tax forms, and compare them line-by-line to see where the major differences are.
