Question

Why did my refund come back higher than what I filed? I filed 4277, they gave me 4298. What do I do? Do i need to pay them back or face penalty?

The additional payment was probably for interest owed to you by the IRS for a late tax refund.  The IRS will send you a letter in the mail within a few weeks explaining the change to your tax refund.  There is nothing you need to do.

You should know that I filed late with an extension because of some name change issues.  So would they still pay me interest if it's my "fault" in a sense, for filing late?  Thanks!!

Yes, the IRS will still pay interest on a late filed tax return.  After 45 days from the date the tax return was received with an overpayment (tax refund) the IRS will pay interest on the refund until the refund is issued by the IRS.
