Question

Why did TurboTax automatically make payment after a correction adjusted my Taxes due by 10x?

I was completing my taxes, and authorized payment based on the amount shown that was shown. TurboTax then alerted to a issue with the filing papers, which when I looked, I realized one of the numbers was in a foreign currency (I work outside of US). When adjusting that number to a USD, the amount I owed went up just over 10 times the original amount showed. Upon the update, TurboTax filed the forms and kicked off the payment - without allowing me to adjust.

I definitely didn't have that much in my bank and would never have authorized that payment had it originally shown. How can TurboTax authorize a payment for a specified amount and then skip authorization once the amount has adjusted. This has cost me so much money. I'm so furious and will never use Turbo Tax again.

This is a user error ... when you made a change to the return you had to complete the FILE section again and you did not catch that the authorized payment went up ... the program doesn't allow for a partial payment ... it is all or nothing when setting up a direct debit.

If you did not want to make the payment in full then you should have changed to the "mail in a check" option so you had control over what is being paid and when.   Of course the bank will deny the debit if your account has insufficient funds and the IRS will send you a bill.  You can always mail in a payment or go online at www.IRS.gov/pay to make a partial payment and/or get on a payment plan.
