Does the state of MI tax them differently?

The forms should be for different amounts. Social security disability for what the government pays on the 1099. The w2 should be the additional money, health insurance, etc that your company is paying. The amounts should be very different.

Mi taxes only the federally taxed portion of the social security. All w2 income is taxable. See line 14 instructions, Schedule 1 Instructions
