Question

Why do I have to fill out the form for start-up cost amortization when my start-up cost was $0.00?

I drove for DoorDash. I had no startup costs and indicated so by not selecting Startup costs from the list of recommended expenses. During the final check of my return, however, an 'issue' manifested because I hadn't completely filled out the amortization of startup costs form. I don't understand why I'm having to do this and wondering if it might be a glitch in the system. Additionally, I was required to enter my mileage for the first half of the year as 0 (I did not conduct this business prior to July) but when I reached the final check, it declared that that section must be blank because I had not claimed to work in that half of the year.

When you are signed into your TurboTax return, you should select Self employment income from the Wages and Income list.

  1. Select Review > Review beside your Door Dash business
  2. Below the word 'Expenses' select Start or Revisit beside Startup Costs (there may be a trash can to remove at this point)
  3. On the next screen you will be asked 'Do you have any Startup Costs'
  4. You can say no on this screen or go through to make sure you don't have any entries in that section.  Clear then out first then when you get to the summary page you can delete it.
  5. See the image below.
