If you owe federal taxes it is because you did not have enough withholdings, or you did not pay enough estimated taxes, throughout the tax year to cover your total tax liability.

First, check to make sure you've entered in all your information into TurboTax, as the refund/amount owed is not fully calculated until you have completed the whole program. Next, make sure the data you entered is accurate. A typo can make a big difference in your return.

Next, consider how your tax return may have changed this year. Maybe you started a second job, or have a new source of income. Or you may no longer qualify for a credit or deduction that you have in the past.  Review this FAQ for more information on what may have caused this amount to be due and how you can make sure you don't owe next year.

TurboTax knows how to calculate your federal tax.

That's what you're paying for.
