Why do I owe Turbo Tax when I choose the free filing?

You are posting from TurboTax Deluxe so you either started in Deluxe or mistakenly upgraded to Deluxe while preparing your return. The Free Edition can only be used for very simple tax returns that can be filed using only form 1040 and do not require any additional schedules. There is another free version from the Free File Program that you might be able to use. You qualify if you had $36,000 or less AGI or $69,000 or less military family AGI or qualify for EITC. Click on See if you qualify then Yes (if you do) then Start Now button, then choose Create an Account.

Well somehow you did get into Deluxe.  There are 2 free versions. In the regular Turbo Tax Free Edition, information that you can enter is limited now.  Why do I have to upgrade from the Free Edition?

OR There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state.  And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE,  etc.

To qualify for the Free File website  you just need to meet one of these 3 things
AGI $36,000 or less
Active duty military with AGI of $69,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)
