Why do turbo tax need my spouse social security number when fileing married but filing separately

The IRS requires your spouses' social security number when filing separately.  One reason is, if you itemize instead of taking the standard deduction, your spouse must also itemize their return.  

So, this is an IRS requirement not a TurboTax thing.
