Why do you have to purchase upgrade if you don't know if it's going to increase your refund??

The upgrade is not about getting an increased refund. If the software detects that your tax situation requires expanded coverage, it will prompt you to upgrade to a version that supports the forms you need so we can maximize your tax deductions and ensure you file an accurate return. For example, if you are using the Free Edition and you are trying to enter in income from a rental property it will ask you to upgrade.
