Question

Why does my wife's ITIN appear expired in the TurboTax software even though she used it to file the tax return for the last two years (2022 and 2021)?

My wife applied for her ITIN when she first filed her 2021 tax return with me as "Married Jointly". We then use the same ITIN to file as "Married Jointly" in the 2022 tax return as well. Why did this expire in 2023?

Does this apply to the ITIN you entered? - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/individual-taxpayer-identification-number

Expired ITINs: If your ITIN wasn't included on a U.S. federal tax return at least once for tax years 2020, 2021, and 2022, your ITIN will expire on December 31, 2023. ITINs with middle digits (the fourth and fifth positions) "70," "71," "72," "73," "74," "75," "76," "77," "78," "79," "80," "81," "82," "83," "84," "85," "86," "87," or "88" have expired. In addition, ITINs with middle digits "90," "91," "92," "94," "95," "96," "97," "98," or "99," IF assigned before 2013, have expired.

Thanks for sharing the article. The ITIN was included in the 2021 and 2022 U.S. federal tax returns as a dependent. Though the middle digits start with "9", it was issued after 2013. So, these expiration rules do not apply to this ITIN.
