Question

Why does the IRS 1040 show a refund of $579, but when I go to file Turbo Tax say my refund is $367, and I used the FREE edition?

Are you seeing a summary that nets the difference between a federal refund and state tax that you owe?   Your federal refund will be shown on line 35a of your Form 1040.   But look over your state return----do you owe the state?   Do the math between your federal refund and the amount owed to the state.  Does that equal $367?

As Xmasbaby0 mentions above, you may have seen a net refund that was your Federal refund less what you owed to the state.

Your refund may be different if you chose the Refund Processing Service to pay your TurboTax Online fees. TurboTax fees plus the additional processing fees are deducted from your Federal Tax refund.

It also may have changed due to an update in the program prior to e-filing..

Your refund amount is found on your Form 1040, on line 35a.
