Question

Why does turbo tax say I don’t qualify as head of household because I didn’t pay more than 50% of the living expenses when I paid 100% of the living expenses?

Go through the TurboTax questions and review your responses. You may have inadvertently answered a question that is not allowing you to file as Head of Household (HOH).

  1. Select My info from the left side menu.
  2. On the Personal info summary screen, scroll down to your daughter and Edit.
  3. On the Who do you support? screen, select My child
  4. Review your responses, especially the Date of birth and Citizenship.
  5. On the Tell us more about XXX living situation last year question, review Did your daughter pay for more than half of her living expenses and other support? If you answered "yes", your daughter is not your dependent if she paid for more than 50% of her living expenses. By answering "yes", TurboTax would not allow you to claim the HOH filing status.
  6. Continue through the TurboTax interview and review each question to make sure you answered it correctly.
  7. If after reviewing your responses, TurboTax is still not allowing you to claim HOH, please review the TurboTax FAQ's Who can I claim as my dependent? and Do I qualify for Head of Household in 2022?
