why does turbotax tell me I have to file seperately for state instead of jointly like I will to on my federal?

    It depends on your situation. ‌Sometimes, if you lived in different states and/or made money from different states, filing a married separate returns might be more advantageous.‌ It also depends on the state. Some states only let you use the filing status as your federal filing, and some let you file separately.
