Question

Why doesn’t my daughter born in 2005 qualify as a tax credit?

The reason I’m getting she doesn’t qualify is because she is 17 years or older. But in 2022 she was only 16 years old.

To be a qualifying child for the 2022 tax year, your dependent generally must:

  • Be under age 17 at the end of the year

A person born in 2005 turns 17 in 2022 and that disqualifies her for the 2022 Child Tax Credit (CTC).  Instead, she qualifies for the (up to ) $500 Other Dependent Credit (ODC), which is non refundable.

Remember, back in 2005, you got the full CTC for her, even though she was only here for part of the year.

In other words, because that's the cutoff that Congress picked.
