Question

Why is my SSN on Schedule E (filing jointly) when it's my wife's income?

My SSN is on Schedule E for wife's K-1 income even though I clearly indicated it was her income.  Shouldn't it be her SSN? I'm guessing this is because I am the primary SSN but then on another form, her SSN is listed for HSA Contributions.  Why the inconsistency?

As you've already noted, since you are the Primary Taxpayer, your SSN will appear on the top of almost all the major Forms and Schedules. In the case of Schedule E, if this was a Partnership K-1 with Self-Employment Income entered in Box 14, your wife's SSN would appear on the Schedule SE for her self-employment tax, because it would apply only to her.  Likewise, HSA contributions are entered according to the SSN of the Beneficiary of the HSA, and the contributions are limited based on the individual's age and other circumstances. Most K-1s just become part of the joint return and don't have a tax effect for only one spouse.
