Why on my return did it say I was approved for all these tax breaks and it didn't add to my federal return ?

The tax breaks you may be referring to are the $4050 personal and dependency exemptions you get for each tax payer and dependent. They do not directly increase your refund. They reduce the amount of income along with your standard or itemized deductions that you must pay tax on.
