Why was I charged $146 when my entire tax return was only $179?

Your post indicates that you used TurboTax Live Basic Online.  The "Live" part of that indicates that you used (or paid for) Expert help, such as a CPA or Enrolled Agent to prepare your return.  Before you checked out and made payment, you should have seen the charges that you were agreeing to.   Did you add any additional features, a state return maybe?  Here's a link to the TurboTax webpage that describes your product:  TurboTax Live Basic
