Why would I need to import last years tax returns to turbo tax?

The "transfer" automatically fills in your basic information, such as name, address, etc. It's simply a convenience so that you won't have to re-enter all that info again. It also transfers info such as last year's employer. See the TurboTax FAQ below for more information.
