Sorry you need Windows 8 or higher to install 2020.  Window System Requirements

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/system-requirements/help/minimum-system-requirements-for-turbotax-windows-software/00/26175

You will have to find another computer or you can use the Online browser version.

If you used the Desktop program last year here’s How to transfer into the Online version, expand the blue link if you used the CD/download last year

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/entering-importing/help/how-do-i-transfer-last-year-s-return-into-turbotax-online/00/25953

If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version.  It has less features and no Forms Mode.  You can only do 1 return.  Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2020 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done.  In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something.  You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.

This is an absolute betrayal to your loyal customers! I am beyond unhappy. Who are you to demand that I upgrade my operating system, when you know absolutely nothing about  What I do, or what safety measures I have in place. Additionally, you place "For Windows and Mac" clearly visible on the front of your software package, yet in print so small I can not read it without reading glasses on the back of the package say "windows 8 or higher" Now , you leave me to fight to get my hundred dollars back, and find another way to do my taxes.
It was truly a struggle to write this without using profanity.

Yeah this is beyond belief to expect this and give no warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cust support said it could be done as well and sent a link that was about getting 2019 data online. Totally wrong (I knew it!) that it would install on windows 7 with lame excuse it is insecure- That is my business. I knew she would be. She hung up on me as well when I was getting agitated in that what she said did not make complete sense. I am beyond pissed off. Same with profanities wanting to be used here. Just don't want my message deleted or I would.

I am not sure what kind of "warning" you expected.  Most new software is not built for an 11 year old operating system that is no longer supported by its own creator.

I can only laugh at all of the people who are going to get refunds.  What software are you going to buy?  No tax software that I can find runs on Windows 7 and most discontinued support for it last year, when TurboTax gave it another year.  It will not work on TaxAct, Tax Slayer, or H&R Block.

You need to update your system or use the online option which is the version the majority of folks use anyhow. There is another choice for you aside from upgrading your ridiculously outdated machines.

This is a total customer care garbage -- I'm requesting my refund from Costco now.

Done dealing with Intiuit.

Turbo Tax is using the excuse of Windows 7 not to support their products. The operating system should not have any impact on the software. It seems they are working for Microsoft. Big fat excuse!

This is a bunch of BS. People should not have to upgrade their computers just to run Turbo Tax. Very un-happy

So I have purchased TurboTax Premier.  When I tried to install it, I was told I had to upgrade or use the online version.  I don't really have the desire or money to purchase a new PC that is strong enough to run Windows 10, so I chose to do the online taxes.  I was led to believe that since the product has been purchased, I would have the opportunity to enter the license code and get to work.  Well I got to work, finished my taxes, but can't find where to enter the license code.  Did I miss something?

A license code is only used with the TurboTax software installed on a personal computer, not with the online editions.

If you purchased the TurboTax desktop CD/Download software then you should request a refund.

Go to this TurboTax website to request a refund for the software purchased from TurboTax - https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/forms/refund-request.jsp
Use this TurboTax website to check your orders and payments -

I have Windows 7 Professional.  Will Turbo Tax work with this?

Not the Desktop program.  You can use the online version.

I ditto every dissatisfied (ex) customer on this site.  "We are just trying to protect you from the bad guys" is an awful excuse for forcing users into Windows 10.  This nonsense is exactly why I stopped using Quicken back in 2003 (which I had been using since 1985 - literally, the 2nd year after it had first been released). I guess what else can we expect from the company that spent millions lobbying the government to STOP simplifying the tax code?  I may just go back to doing taxes by hand... or pay a tax preparer.  At least they won't tell me what color stamp to use, or which brand of pen I should be signing with.

How could you do this to people????? You never mentioned on the box that it would not work with Windows 7. You ripped me off. I will NEVER us your products again. You have so angered me at the worst possible moment. It's like you don't want me to be your customer, you want an enemy. Bastards!!!!  How could you do this to people?????

Will 2020 turbo tax run with Windows 7

I agree, I'm pretty upset. First I somehow clicked the auto renewal last year, unaware that I did until I seen on bank statement....so I thought ok it's paid so I'm all set. Well spent hour trying to download only to go in circles, then called, didn't wait so got a callback and no one came on line for 13 minutes! I hung up and tried again to download. Never got the CD. Finally called again spoke with a real nice lady but didn't get it resolved. Thought I could upgrade to windows 8.1 but the extra cost and my computer still didn't meet the minimum requirements. I am now expecting a complete refund almost 200.00. Oh and have to file for an extension and find someone to do my taxes. 4 hours later I'm done with them. I hope they refund every person this happened to.

Ok folks, I found a solution that works. It's not for the faint of heart, however, but if you have some computer skills, you can do it. I have successfully installed Turbotax Premier 2020 on my Windows 7 Ultimate PC. It may be too late for most, but for those of us in Texas who have until June 15 and still haven't filed, here you go.

I found the solution in the comments of this page:

see below for comment

I won't elaborate on the instructions below. If you are tech savvy enough you will be able to figure it out, otherwise you are best off getting someone to do it for you. There are at least a couple steps that may confuse the lay person. Good luck. Feel free to reply and if I am able I will help.

Oh and yes, it's complete BS that Intuit has chosen to restrict this edition from working on Windows 7 as it works perfectly. There is no excuse.

Here is the comment:

Not sure if different distributions (web vs CD, different editions) have different installers. The TurboTax 2020/TurboTax 2020 Installer.exe does an additional check for OS version. You don't need to patch the setup.exe first if you have this installer, though you may have to manually install Prerequisites/dotNetFx452_setup.exe if you don't already have a .NET 4.5 or greater installation.

You can patch out the TurboTax 2020 Installer.exe check with the fantastic dnSpy.

  1. Install and launch dnSpy
  2. Make a copy of TurboTax 2020 Installer.exe for backup
  3. Drag original exe into the Assembly Explorer pane of dnSpy (this is the pane on the left)
  4. Browse to TurboTax 2020 Installer/TurboTax 2020 Installer.exe/Intuit.Tax.Installers.Setup.Common/OSInfo
  5. Press Ctrl-Shift-E with cursor on IsSupportedOs() or right click method and choose Edit method (C#)
  6. Change line 11 bool result = false to bool result = true, or just replace whole method body with return true
  7. Press Compile
  8. NEXT STEP WILL OVERWRITE YOUR ORIGINAL EXE, MAKE SURE YOU MADE A BACKUP IN STEP 2
  9. Press Save All (Ctrl-Shift-S) and press OK
  10. Run TurboTax 2020 Installer.exe

Note: I have Premier, it installed as Basic and asked for a license key to activate.
