I'm having a hard time trying to figure out if my parents would claim me as a dependent this tax season. In 2016 I lived with my parents and went to school for two semesters and then graduated in August 2016. I pretty much paid for everything except anything that had to do with the house, i.e. clothes, food, car insurance, school, gas etc. At the end of the year was not, well I don't think, I was a full time student because I graduated in August. Would I still be a qualifying child if I was full time part of the year?

Since you are lived at home and graduated in August of 2016 (which counts as a full-time student and meets the required 5 calendar months), therefore you would be considered a qualifying child dependent, please see the following conditions, which must be met:

1. You are under age 19, or under 24 if a full-time student for at least 5 months of the year, or is totally & permanently disabled

2. You did not provide more than 1/2 of you own support

Support includes:

  • Food
  • Lodging (even if your mortgage is paid off)
  • Clothing
  • Education (including the GI bill)
  • Medical and dental care (including insurance and supplementary Medicare premiums)
  • Recreation
  • Transportation and similar necessities

3. You lived with your parents (or was away at school) for more than half the year

Furthermore, IF your parents claims you as a dependent, you are not allowed to claim you own exemption. If you earned income of more than $6,300, then you should file your own taxes; but you don't claim an $4,050 exemption (deduction) for yourself.

In TurboTax, you (not your parents) would need to indicate that somebody else can claim you as a dependent, at the Personal Info section.
