Thanks for replying, I thought my question was rather straightforward and a simple yes or no would have been good enough but guess not. The question was for my son whose taxes I do and he was unemployed during 2020. Due to his education level he has a very difficult time staying employed, he is in his mid 30s with an education level in the area of a 2nd to 4th grader. He lives with with mom and dad. Now does he need to file or not. Thanks

No, it does not sound like he needs to file a tax return if he had zero income. But just to clarify - did he receive any unemployment? Did you claim him in 2020? The only reason I can think of to file a return is if no one claimed him in 2020 and he did not receive stimulus payments #1 or #2.
