You guarantee free, but I was charged $80! THAT'S NOT FREE!!!I think it's a RIP Off! I was charged last year too.

TurboTax doesn't "guarantee" free.  The claim is that you can "start for free".  If everyone could file for free, TurboTax couldn't be in business.

 

The Free Edition is for only the simplest of returns.  As you enter your tax data, the program determines if your return requires an upgrade to a paid edition.  Apparently, yours did.  And once a user is required to upgrade to a paid edition, the state tax preparation program is no longer free, either.  See the information linked below for more explanation.

 

Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition?
