Can we deduct flight costs (plane rental and instructor) for my sons Commercial Pilot Program required flights at a major unive? We pay it separate from his tuition?

The Commercial Pilot Program at the university requires he rent the plane(s) and instructor for each flight.  We pay the costs separate from tuition

Yes, if it was required for his course of study. They would be entered as education expenses, and if you meet the other requirements, would be used to qualify as an education credit. 

 

"... expenses for books, supplies, and equipment needed for a course of study are included in qualified education expenses whether or not the materials are purchased from the educational institution."
