Cleaning Fee Income- Box 1 or 3 on 1099?

We received a 1099-misc from our property managers and the cleaning fee income (paid by departing renters) was included in box 3, other income, instead of box 1, rental income. Is this correct? It is causing me to have 'other income' and self employment taxes, etc. Thanks!

Because it is attached to the rental income, you can combine and report in Box 1.  TurboTax is programmed to always  prompt for self-employment if there is income reported in Box 3 but that is not always the case.

Thank you! Do I need to have the 1099 reissued to move the $ to box 1?

No, you can ask the Management Co to re-issue the 1099-MISC, but that might be more work than needed.

The IRS looks to see if the amount is reported, they don't see how you entered it.

Entering the full amount as if it were reported in Box 1 puts the income where it should be.

I would go with the advice MaryK4 gave and enter it all in Box 1.

Tell the management company to change their reporting methods.
