Question

Has my "Residential Energy Credits" Form 5695 ship sailed out to sea on my rental?

Scenario, my condo, I am living there.

New windows on      8/10/2016 for 3700

New patio door on 9/30/2019  for  2880

Never took deduction for Residential Energy Credits.    I move outfall 2020.

I rent it in 2021.

Just finished my 2021 return, filed it yesterday , did not attempt to take these deductions, am I dead in the water here? or could I attempt to take these deductions next year? Had new patio door put in last year in my new place for 5477, took the deduction yesterday,  knocked off 500 bucks off my amount due, impressive!

This is worth the chase.

Thanks much,

Steven F.

You can't deduct the windows or door directly since since you weren't renting the house when you installed them. You can add them to the cost basis of the house which you can depreciate and you will get a small deduction for them each year you have the house rented.

The windows may have been eligible for an energy credit, but you would have had to have claimed that back in 2016, and you can't amend that return since you can't amend a return beyond three years from the due date.
