Question

HI, what if your 1099-B does not have a cost basis for a stock? This stock was purchased > 10 years ago, so I am not able to find old tax documents online with this info

In your search engine, enter 'historical stock prices by date' to find a resource to locate a reasonable estimate of the cost of the stock purchased more than ten years ago.

Retain a copy of any report that you generate should a tax authority ask you to justify the cost basis that you report for the transaction.

Under Investments and Savings, enter the cost basis under Total amount paid.
