To enter a stock contribution listed on Form 8283 in TurboTax and to obtain the cost basis (needed to correctly complete donation entries), follow these steps:

Open or continue your return in TurboTax  - Be sure you are logged in for links to work:

Navigate to the charitable donations section:

    Enter your stock donation:

    • Answer "Yes" to the question about making charitable donations.
    • Select "Stock" as the type of donation.
    • Provide details about the stock, including the fair market value, date of donation, and any restrictions.

    Handling Missing Cost Basis:

    • TurboTax will prompt you to provide as much information as possible about the stock, including the acquisition date and fair market value at the time of donation
    • To find a stock's cost basis:
      • Sign in to your brokerage account: Check for detailed reports on each sale.
      • Look at previous broker statements: Review trade confirmations.
      • Contact your brokerage firm: They may have purchase records or can look up historical prices.
      • Go online for historical stock prices: Use sites like Marketwatch or Nasdaq.
      • Go directly to the source: Check the company's investor relations section or call their shareholder services.
    • TurboTax will automatically include Form 8283 if the value of your noncash donations exceeds $500
    • Ensure you have the name and address of the charity; descriptions of the donated stock, acquisition details, purchase price, and value at the time of donation.

    Appraisal Requirement:

    • If the value of the stock donation exceeds $5,000, you will need a qualified appraisal conducted within 60 days prior to the donation
