Two options:

  • Download your tax .data file from last year and use desktop software for 2023. If you go this route, be sure to add the information back into your online account when done so it will carry through. If you have already paid, you can  contact support. for the download free. Then your information online  can be corrected by you and used in the future.
  • You will need to enter the information again using last year's return for guidance. From my fake return, you can see on Form 4562 the asset description, code, date placed in service, cost without land, business use, sec 179 depreciation, regular depreciation, the depreciable basis, life, moth and convention used along with prior depreciation taken. Since you will be working with this form from 2022, prior depreciation does not include 2022 depreciation so be sure to add that for your 2023 totals.

You want to know:

  • You don't need to enter assets that are fully depreciated.
  • You might need to look at worksheets and prior year returns to get all of the information.

Remember to keep all returns related to the house from purchase until sold plus 3 years minimum.

As you can see in the screen shot, prior depreciation is for 2021 and before while current depreciation is for 2022. Those must be added together to get the correct number for 2023 prior depreciation.
