Question

I am a full time college student renting an apartment off campus, and am claimed as a dependent by my parents. Can I deduct the rent from my Michigan state taxes?

Yes.

If you file a MI tax return as a dependent, you may be eligible for the MI Homestead property tax credit if all of the following apply:

• Your homestead is located in Michigan

• You were a Michigan resident at least six months of 2021

• You own your Michigan homestead and property taxes were levied in 2022, or you paid rent under a rental contract.

As a dependent. you must fill correctly line 24 of form MI1040CR to report the support you received your parents to determine if you are eligible.

Please read the instructions for form MI1040CR, page 32 which say:

Line 24: Enter the value over $300 in gifts of cash or merchandise received, or expenses paid on your behalf (rent, taxes, utilities, food, medical care, etc.) by parents, relatives, or friends. This includes the amount of financial support you received if you are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. Do not include government payments made directly to third parties such as an educational institution or subsidized housing project.
