Question

I am a self-employed massage therapist who rented practice space from another massage therapist for a few months last year. How do I file a 1099 MISC for rent I paid?

Last year I mailed  the 1099MISC both to the people whom I paid rent to and to the IRS, but this year I need to file my 1099MISC electronically if I can. Most of what I have been finding on 1099 MISC here is for people who received a 1099MISC for rent that was paid to them, not for people who need to report rent paid to the IRS.

If you paid rent over $600 directly to the other massage therapist, you should send him a form 1099-MISC reporting the rent paid in box 1.

You should also send that form 1099-MISC to the IRS together with a form 1096 by February 28, 2021 or March 31 if you file electronically.

There are penalties for late filing. Please see this IRS document.

You can use TurboTax Self-Employed to prepare and e-file forms W-2 and 1099-NEC.

To prepare forms 1099-MISC, follow these steps:

  1. Sign out of your account and sign in again.
  2. On the landing page, click on the down arrow next to Your account then click on  Create W2s and 1099s.
  3. You will be taken to the TurboTax Quick Employer Forms (QEF) website.
  4. Sign in with your TurboTax username and password. If you do not have an account, click Create Account to create a new account. Note carefully the username and password as you need then if you need to retrieve the forms later.
  5. After signing in, click on Create New Form
  6. On the next page, choose the type of forms you wish to prepare then click Continue to begin entering information for your forms.
