Question

I am entering rental expenses, and it says I am allocating, but I have the exact expenses - how do I change it from allocating?

Did you have a vacation home or a multi family such as a duplex? If so, you need to tell the program that you do not want TurboTax to allocate; that you will do it yourself?

If you did not have either of these situations, did you inadvertently say that you did?

Go back through the rental section from the beginning and look for the location to indicate how you want to handle the expenses.

It is a one bedroom apartment in our home, so yes it is being entered as a duplex that we also live in. I do want it to allocate for the mortgage portion, but I have exact expenses for the water, electricity, and gas.

Go to the Federal section in TurboTax.

  1. Select "Income & expenses"
  2. Select "Rental Properties & Royalties (Sch. E.)
  3. Answer the questions relating to your property until you see the screen which says "Do Any of These Situations Apply to This Property".
  4. Under the Rental section, check the box where it says "I rent out part of my home".

Rent a part of your home

Select Continue through the next screens asking about whether the property was rented out all year and having a home office.

You will then see the following screen:

Enter your expenses

Select "No" here to enter your actual expenses as opposed to TurboTax allocating your expenses.
