Question

I didn’t sell any of my stocks this past year because I’m a long term investor, I only had 2 call options that expired worthless, do I need to file taxes?

I also didn’t have a job this past year so I didn’t have any capital gains.

Generally, if you did not have income greater than $13,850 or self-employment income of more than $400, then no, you would not need to file a return this year.

Owning stock is not a reportable event.  It only becomes reportable when you sell the stock.

If you are married, even if you did not have income, you can still file a joint return with your spouse.  This may produce a better overall tax outcome if you do.
