Question

I drove up to Michigan in January to start work and stayed in motels and a rental house until I bought a house on 3/04. When would I say I became a resident of Michigan?

My paystub did not change until 3/15 stub when I was able to update with a new permanent address.

You became a MI resident on your first day at the new job.

i would say January when you move to the state.

Part-year resident. You are a part-year resident if, during
the year, you move your permanent home into or out of
Michigan. You must pay Michigan income tax on income
you earned, received, or accrued while living in Michigan.
Use Michigan Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Schedul
