Why is Turbo Tax not allowing deductions of rental property expenses from income?

Are you reporting rental activity in TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop?  What deductions are you trying to report that are not being allowed?

I recommend establishing the rental activity on Schedule E Supplemental Income and Loss first and then reporting the income into the rental activity.  The IRS form 1099-K amount may then be reported as a separate income source and be easily identified.

Schedule E is exactly what I expected after entering my 1099-K for rental income. The algorithm did not ask if I have expenses. I called into Turbo tax to speak with someone and she didn’t understand why I needed a schedule E. She hung up on me. I cleared my entries for 2024 and will find a professional.

In TurboTax Premium Online, add expenditures by following these steps:

    • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
    • Down the left side of the screen, click on Wages & income.
    • Click the down arrow to the right of Rentals, Royalties, and Farm.
    • Click to the right of Rental Properties and Royalties.
    • At the screen Your 2024 rentals and royalties summary, select the pencil icon to open the rental activity.
    • At the screen Here's rental property info, select Add expense or asset to report expenditures.
