Question

I rent two rooms with my daughter at someone else's house. I pay for our food and rent. Would I be considered the head of the household?

It depends on who's house and how old your daughter is. Do you pay utilities? If it is your parents house or her other parents house, then probably not if they are paying all the utilities and buying her clothes, and maintenance and everything else.

If it is a complete stranger and you are paying rent that includes utilities, then yes.

To file as Head of Household, you have to:

  • Pay for more than half of the expenses for a qualifying household
  • Be considered unmarried on the last day of the tax year
  • Have a qualifying child or dependent
