If I own a rental duplex, and moved into one of the units in September, but continued to rent the other unit for the remainder of the year, how do I enter the expenses?

I suggest that you report them as two separate units on your Schedule E, and then transfer your unit over as your personal property.

 

The common expenses will be split between the two unit.  I suggest you base it on the square footage of the units.

 

Individual expenses will be allocated directly to the unit.
