Question

My son is living in my rental and pays no fees. Do I still need to file a Schedule E if I receive no income for it?

If you do not charge rent, then you do not report any rental income and do not need to file a Schedule E. But you cannot deduct any rental expense.

Your rental is "out of service". You now have a 2nd home. You can deduct mortgage interest  and real estate tax on on Schedule A (itemized deductions) subject to certain limitations which TurboTax will apply.
