Question

Non-resident state tax

I am an Indiana resident with a business and rentals in Indiana.  In 2022 I bought a vacation rental in Georgia.  In TurboTax my Georgia return is treating all of my income as taxable. The result is more in taxes due from Georgia than I made in Georgia. How do I separate and direct the rental income to the proper state in TurboTax?

To ensure accurate calculations, always complete the non-resident (GA) return first if filing in multiple states because your resident (IN) state might give you a credit for any taxes paid in that situation. Please see How do I file a nonresident state return?

You 'll be able to allocate the rental income to GA and your other income to IN.  TurboTax will either ask you to separate the income you earned or to verify the allocation amounts TurboTax already calculated for you.

  • After you finish your federal return, you'll automatically move to the State tab, where you'll see your nonresident state(s) listed in addition to your resident state.
