I own a duplex, I live on one floor and rent out the other.

My real estate taxes for the entire home are 2001.00.

Can someone help me on how much to enter on the following two sections?

1. Rental Property section under Income

2. Deduction and Credit Section under Main Home Property Taxes

Thank You in advance .

The easiest way to enter your property taxes is to split the cost 50/50 since it's a duplex and you live in one and rent the other.

    • Enter $1,001 for your rental property tax in the Rental section of TurboTax and
    • $1,000 for property tax in the Deduction and Credit section under your main home.

    Thank you!

Once I input the 1, 001.00 in the rental section it states be sure to enter 100% of your expenses in these fields.

If I just put 1001.00 as you say, once I go over to the deductions section it says

"Don't enter personal taxes from your rental, the 500.00 is already taken care of.

Shouldn't I need it to state 1,001 Is already taken care of?

Meaning I would have to input 2001.00 in the rental section to then have it say 1001.00 is already taken care of.

Using my way, yes, it should say $1,000.

You set up your rental, in TurboTax, to make the 50% calculation automatically.

To get to that section of TurboTax:

    1. Sign into your TurboTax account.
    2. Select Pick up where you left off
    3. Select Federal from the left side menu, then Wages & Income.
    4. On the Wages and Income screen, scroll down to Rental Properties and Royalties (Sch E) and Edit/Add.
    5. Edit your Duplex.
    6. Continue through the onscreen interview until you get to the Want us to divide the rental-related portion of XXX? screen. You selected that you want TurboTax to do the 50% math.
    7. If you want to do the 50% calculation yourself, select No, I'll do the math and enter only the rental-related portion.
