Question

Turbotax has calculated a capital gains number for my state return that I do not understand.

I put in all of my information from the appropriate forms, but the number they are saying is my total is significantly higher than the numbers I put in.

Capital gains for what? Did you sell rental property? Stocks? Something else? You need to provide more details. Otherwise, it's a stab in the dark.
