Question

TurboTax shows $0 rental income when I file non-resident Virginia return. It does't carry over. I did have rental income in VA. Why is it showing $0 even tho Federal has a value?

The federal amount is $3000 or so. But in the Nonresident Income Allocation it shows all my other federal income, but $0 for Rents. It didn't seem to carry it over to VA. Do I need to manually do it?

It is possible that you have rental income of $3,000 but losses from other passive investments, like a partnership interest, or a business loss carryover from previous years, that is reducing your net rental income to zero. I would look on your schedule 1, line 5 on your form 1040 and see if the rental income is reported there. In any case, you can enter the rental income that belongs to Virginia even if the federal amount shows $0.

You can view your form 1040 and schedules 1 to 3 while working in the online version of TurboTax by following these steps:

  1. Click on Tax Tools in the left menu bar
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Look under Other Helpful links….
  4. Choose View Tax Summary
  5. Look in the left menu bar and choose Preview my 1040
  6. Scroll down the page to see form 1040 and schedules 1 to 3

Schedule 1, line 5 shows $0. Looking at my final return there was a loss from last year that canceled out the remaining income this year. So does that mean I do not have any Virginia rental income to pay taxes on?

On federal, income is reported but reduced to zero. In VA, income on rental must be reported. Be sure to include it when you go through the state return. You may or may not be taxed depending on VA circumstances.
