Question

What do I do if I can't find what state applies for my exempt-interest dividends for my form 1099-DIV? I looked it up on my financial company's website but can't find it.

The whole amount is taxable for the state if you are unable to find the percentage that should be tax exempt on your state return.

Your financial company should show, as part of your year end statement (usually a separate brochure or document), the percentage for each state where the tax exempt interest was derived.  If you still don't have any luck finding it on the website you should contact them by phone.

If all attempts fail than you must tax the full amount on your resident state return.
